About the author (2026)

Ann Frederick Oppenhimer was born in North Tazewell, Va., in 1935 and graduated in 1956 from the University of Richmond, with a BS in Biology. She graduated from the Medical College of Virginia with a BS in Medical Technology in 1957. After her three children were all in school, she studied Art History and Photography at Virginia Commonwealth University and received a Master’s degree in Art History in 1975. Her first husband, Dr. Philip Frederick Jr,., died in 1980, and she married Dr. William “Boo” Oppenhimer in 1981. She taught Art History at the University of Richmond for 17 years. In 1987, Ann and Boo Oppenhimer, co-founded the Folk Art Society of America and published the Folk Art Messenger for 38 years. She lives in Richmond.
