Issues of Style in Self-taught Art

Issues of Style in Self-taught Art

From January 14, 2012 to September 9, 2012

Examining works from variety of artists in the collection, the exhibition focuses on a concept that traditionally organizes our thoughts on art. Self-taught art employs many diverse characteristics of expression related to issues of style. Artists such as Phillip Travers and Melissa Polhamus use space in specific ways in their compositions. Polhamus densely populates the picture plane, filling it with images that appear to present sequential events. Travers fills the picture plane but also plays with scale, ambiguous space and text to create cartoon like narratives reminiscent of story boards. By examining these common characteristics that define a style, we obtain new insight into their work.
