Mark Francis was raised in western Kentucky, and he taught himself to make art in prison, eventually becoming one of the world’s finest papier-mâché artists. His works from prison mostly deal with emotional and psychological aspects of living in incarceration. Some pieces are full of humor. Others are full of fear or anguish. All of the pieces are technically incredible.

Roosters in Kentucky Folk Art

From:
Monday, March 7, 2016
Until:
Saturday, May 28, 2016

The rooster has long been a dominant image in Kentucky folk art. Perhaps no animal, other than the snake, has been depicted by so many folk artists in so many different ways. In the days before television, computers, and cell phones, folks who lived on farms would have found entertainment in watching the strutting roosters and hens. The rooster shows up repeatedly in folk tales, literature, and the Bible. The rooster is also the symbol of the Kentucky Democratic party, which controlled politics in the state for most of the latter half of the twentieth century.
